Although the FM Towns port of Bullfrog‘s classic Syndicate is in Japanese, it’s still a great game to play if you know what you’re doing. Of course this is not the right version of Syndicate to play if it’s your first time (unless you can read Japanese), but it is a sharp port with crisp high resolution graphics and responsive controls.

TIE Fighter, PC
TIE Fighter was first released in 1994 and is the sequel to the smash hit space combat game, X-Wing, which are both of course based on spacecraft from the Star Wars universe. This time, though, you get to fight on the side of The Empire, who are widely seen as the ‘bad guys’ in the Star Wars series, so in this game you are blasting Rebels and their collaborators out of space, and not the other way around.
Maniac Mansion, NES/Famicom
The NES/Famicom version of Maniac Mansion was developed and published by Jaleco in 1990 and is still worth playing today. It’s a fine port of a great game and translates well enough to Nintendo‘s machine that it arguably plays even better than the C64 original (although many will cry “Sacrilege!” to that).
Syndicate, Atari Jaguar
Bullfrog‘s classic tactical action game, Syndicate, was published for the Atari Jaguar by Ocean Software in 1995, and while the game works well enough it does suffer a bit from the switch from mouse to gamepad controls.
Syndicate, Amiga
The Amiga version of Bullfrog‘s classic tactical action game, Syndicate, came out at more or less the same time as the original PC version, and – as good as the game is – I have to say that it is not as good as the MS-DOS version, and I’ll explain why…
Super BurgerTime, Arcade
Super BurgerTime is the obscure 1990 sequel to Data East‘s classic 1982 arcade hit, BurgerTime. The game didn’t get wide distribution at the time of its original release, which is why it’s not that well known.
Crysis, PC
Crysis is a futuristic first-person shooter developed by German company Crytek and published by Electronic Arts in 2007. It is the first game in the Crysis series and is known as a game that – at the time of its original release – had relatively high-end system requirements. It’s also quite similar to Crytek‘s previous game, Far Cry, in that it is predominantly combat based in a jungle environment, with vehicles like jeeps, trucks, cars, hovercraft and boats that can be commandeered and driven.
Colt Canyon, PC
Colt Canyon is a single-player Wild West-based pixel art ‘twin stick’-style shooter developed by German company Retrific and published by Headup in 2020. You play a cowboy who must save his kidnapped partner from ruthless bandits. In fact: you can play as a variety of different characters – if you unlock them first.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein, PC
Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a re-imagining of id Software‘s classic Wolfenstein 3D, developed by Gray Matter Studios and first published by Activision in 2001. It uses the id Tech 3 engine (as created for Quake III) and has a single-player campaign, as well as a multiplayer component where players are split into Allies and Axis.
Wolfenstein 3D, PC
Wolfenstein 3D is an infamous first-person shooter, developed by id Software and published by Apogee Software in 1992. It is essentially a first-person remake of MUSE Software‘s overhead stealth game, Castle Wolfenstein, but with no stealth and lots of shooting.
