Action Force, ZX Spectrum

Developed by Gang of Five and published by Virgin Games in 1987, Action Force is a scrolling shooter set in the world of the Action Force toys by Hasbro/Milton Bradley (aka G.I. Joe toys in North America). Action Force was also released for the Commodore 64 and Amstrad CPC, although the Spectrum version is notably different to those versions.

Choplifter III, Super Nintendo

The 1994 Super Nintendo version of Choplifter III is an updated/enhanced version of the classic 8-bit scrolling shooter, Choplifter, in which you fly a helicopter over enemy territory, rescuing hostages. The game was developed by Beam Software and was published by Extreme Entertainment in North America, Ocean Software in Europe, and Victor Entertainment (JVC) in Japan.

Choplifter III on the Game Boy was developed by Teeny Weeny Games and published in the UK only by Ocean Software in 1994. It is essentially a straight port of the Game Gear version – except without the colour.

Choplifter II on the Game Boy is where the concept of this classic helicopter rescue game first began to fulfil its potential. The overly simple and repetitive gameplay of the original Choplifter has been expanded, making the game much more fun to play.

Choplifter XE, Atari 8-bit

This ‘enhanced’ remake of Dan Gorlin‘s Choplifter was released for Atari XE computers by Atari Corporation in 1988. It features improved graphics, but with pretty much the same gameplay as the original.

Choplifter, Atari 7800

The Atari 7800 conversion of Choplifter was developed by Ibid, Inc. and first released by Atari Corporation in 1987, and while it does at first glance look better than all the other Atari ports of the game, it unfortunately plays pretty poorly.

Choplifter, Sega Master System

The Master System version of Choplifter was developed and published by Sega in 1986, and it is closest to Sega‘s arcade version of the game. That said, it’s not as head-bangingly hard as the arcade version, but does have all the different stages, so could be argued is the best version of (the first) Choplifter around.
