Based on the classic 1983 ZX Spectrum game by Mervyn Escourt, Deathchase XE is an Atari 8-bit remake first released in 2013. It is a first-person bike shooting game where the aim is to speed through a forest full of trees, shooting enemy bikers, helicopters and tanks, while at the same time avoiding collisions with arboreal obstacles that come zooming towards you.
This Atari 8-bit homebrew conversion of Ultimate Play the Game‘s Alien 8 was created by Fandal, Miker, and Emkay in 2013. It wasn’t written from scratch, though; it was ported from the BBC Micro version (according to various sources online), but unfortunately it doesn’t play as well as the Beeb version. It has a fundamental flaw that completely ruins the game…
Hammerwatch is a brilliant single or multi-player fantasy action game with tiny characters fighting off hoards of killer monsters. It features beautiful pixel graphics, atmospheric lighting effects, RPG elements, and seriously challenging gameplay. It was created by Swedish developer Crackshell and first published in 2013. Hammerwatch is available for Windows, Linux, OS X, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and XBox One.
This remake of the classic Build engine shooter, Shadow Warrior, was developed by Flying Wild Hog and first released in 2013.
Like the original, it’s a hectic, balls-to-the-wall shooter that follows the exploits of a guy called Lo Wang and his fight against his boss, Orochi Zilla, and the mega corporation he commands (Zilla Industries).
I’ve played the second game extensively and really enjoyed it, so decided to buy this and see if it was any different. And it is!
The Black Pits II: Gladiators of Thay is an arena combat-based add-on for the Baldur’s Gate II series, given away free with the Enhanced Edition in 2013.
The second of two Baldur’s Gate II titles, this one released by Interplay in 2001. Throne of Bhaal is a real-time Role-Playing Game, based on the BioWare Infinity Engine, and it completes the main plot of the Baldur’s Gate series of games.
Part one of a two-part Baldur’s Gate II series, first published by Interplay in 2000. Shadows of Amn uses an updated version of the Infinity Engine to provide isometric, real-time combat and adventuring.
BioShock Infinite (2013) is the third game in the BioShock series, and it is one a hell of a game! It is a bright, imaginative, funny, touching, emotional, violent and downright surprising adventure, set in a steampunk-style cloud city called Columbia.
This incredibly tough roguelike shooter is a wonderful game. It looks fantastic, scrolling along, with an overhead 3D view, but with 2D sprites in the playfield. Graphically Teleglitch is clever.
This lovely ‘modern retro’ game has been made to look and play like a Super Nintendo game. And I mean that as a compliment.
