Rygar, Arcade

Rygar is a side-scrolling fantasy action game first released into arcades by Tecmo in 1986. In the original Japanese version of the game (called “Argos no Senshi“) the protagonist was called “The Legendary Warrior” and the main villain was called Rygar, but Western versions of the game switched that to make the player character be called Rygar instead. Which subsequently stuck.

The Hobbit, Game Boy Advance

The Game Boy Advance version of The Hobbit was developed by Saffire, Inc. and first released by Sierra Entertainment in 2003. This game is based on Tolkien‘s famous book, and not the Peter Jackson films (the first Hobbit film was released in 2012, and this game actually came out the same year as The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King).

Dazzler, Arcade

Dazzler is an obscure early arcade game – first released in 1982 – from UK-based Century Electronics. In it you play as “OH” (Our Hero) and must deliver bananas to a “monkey” (really an ape) inside a maze, and avoid chasing vultures.

Treasure Hunter G, Super Nintendo

Developed by Sting Entertainment and published by Squaresoft in 1996, Treasure Hunter G is a tactical Japanese Role-Playing Game that features exploration, turn-based combat and a fantasy-based storyline that mixes magic and technology. It was released in Japan only, but a fan translation makes it playable in English.

Donkey Kong, Super Game Boy

The Game Boy port of Donkey Kong was first released by Nintendo in 1994 and it really is something special. I’m showing the Super Game Boy version of Donkey Kong here, with its special arcade bezel border and enhanced colour palette. The 1991 PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 version of Gremlin Graphics‘ classic Monty Mole game is a rare treat: it’s a British-developed PC Engine game, and an alright one at that. And, believe it or not, but the PC Engine version of the game is the one that’s currently available on Steam and GOG.com.

The Grinch, Dreamcast

The Grinch on the Sega Dreamcast was developed by Artificial Mind & Movement and published by Konami in 2000 – to coincide with the film “How The Grinch Stole Christmas“, starring Jim Carrey, which was released the same year. The film is based on the Dr. Seuss book, first published in 1957, which criticises the commercialisation of Christmas.

Santa Claus Saves The Earth, Game Boy Advance

Created by Lithuanian developer Ivolgamus and released for the PlayStation and Game Boy Advance by Telegames in 2002, Santa Claus Saves The Earth is a Christmas-themed platform game that plays better than it looks. Not that it looks particularly bad – it doesn’t; it just doesn’t look that good either. Let’s just call it “middle of the road“… 🙂
