Renegade, Arcade
Renegade is an arcade beat ’em up that was developed by Technos Japan and distributed into arcades by Taito in 1986. Although Renegade might appear basic by today’s standards it was in fact an important game in the fighting genre and one that defined many of the gameplay standards we still see today.
Dark Savior, Sega Saturn
Dark Savior is an isometric action game developed by Climax Entertainment and published by Sega for the Saturn in 1996. In my opinion the game is a bad idea, badly translated, poorly executed, and with some pretty awful story-telling.
The Legend of Oasis, Sega Saturn
The Legend of Oasis is the Saturn-exclusive sequel (and prequel) to Beyond Oasis on the Megadrive/Genesis. It’s also known as “The Story of Thor 2” in some territories. The game was developed by Ancient and published by Sega in 1996.
Nosferatu, Super Nintendo
Nosferatu is a Prince of Persia-style platform game developed and published by SETA Corporation for the Super Nintendo in 1994. As SNES games go, it’s a pretty obscure title that not many people got to play at the time, but is worth unearthing and playing now if you like this type of game.
The Kung Fu, PC Engine
This impressive-looking fighting game – also known as China Warrior in North America and (informally) “Drunken Master” by some – was the first game ever released for the PC Engine. It was developed by Hudson Soft and first published in 1987 by NEC.
RoboCop, Arcade
Released into arcades by Data East in 1988, RoboCop is unusual because the game was licensed from Ocean Software, who had acquired the video game rights at script stage, when the case was usually arcade companies licensing to home companies. The arcade and home versions were developed simultaneously and are a mixture of run-and-gun and beat ’em up-style gameplay.
Violent Storm, Arcade
Released into arcades in 1993 by Konami, Violent Storm is a three-player scrolling beat ’em up in the mould of Capcom‘s 1989 hit, Final Fight.
Jackie Chan’s Action Kung Fu, PC Engine
Jackie Chan’s Action Kung Fu is a scrolling beat ’em up with platforming elements, first released for the NES by Hudson Soft in 1990, and was later released for the PC Engine in 1991.
Jackie Chan’s Action Kung Fu, NES
The Famicom/NES version of Jackie Chan’s Action Kung Fu was developed by Now Production (who made Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti and Splatterhouse 3, among others) and was published by Hudson Soft in 1990. It’s a side-scrolling beat ’em up with platforming elements based around the famous movie actor Jackie Chan.
