In fact: I would call this the fifth Fallout game, because Fallout: New Vegas was more than just game number 3.5, in my humble opinion – it was the best game in the entire series. Quarantine, PC

On the face of it, Quarantine sounds like a fun game: you’re a post apocalypse taxi driver, eking a living out on fares and the odd bigger payday mission – to buy BIG GUNS to put on your car and therefore blow the opposition to smithereens.

In reality, Quarantine is a barely-controllable Doom-clone, with a touch of Carmageddon and GTA about it, but with none of the good qualities of any of those.

The idea of building up funds to buy better weapons is appealing, but the process of picking up and delivering fares is tedious in the extreme because it doesn’t feel like you’re driving a car. It feels like you’re inside a pinball machine… Plus, initially you don’t actually have any guns, so driving around doing taxi jobs (and constantly bumping into other cars) isn’t very exciting. Actually it’s quite boring.

The basic graphics don’t help either as there are few really recognisable landmarks to help guide you around. The ring roads are all mined, which is really annoying as they spring you around like nobody’s business (and add to your overall damage). Actually, keeping control of the car is a real challenge and it doesn’t take long for frustration to set in. Having to spend all your money on repairs is bad enough, but having to find a repair shop is a real drag. The “splat” effects are pathetic too – not a patch on Carmageddon, which this is competing with. Ultimately, though, it is the frustrating, shallow gameplay that renders Quarantine as “bad”.

Canadian developer Imagexcel later went on to become Rockstar Games Toronto. I’m guessing they probably want to forget Quarantine

Tranz Am, ZX Spectrum

Set in a post-apocalypse USA (in the year 3472, no less), Tranz Am is an overhead racing game where the aim is to collect eight cups (The Great Cups of Ultimate), which have been randomly dispersed around the continent.

Fuel is scarce, and finding petrol pumps is essential in the battle to keep going. Obstacles will lose you a car if you crash into them, and other cars pull kamikaze style attacks on you.

Tranz Am – alongside Jet Pac, Pssst, and Cookie – comprise the early Ultimate 16K collection from 1983, all of which are considered classics for good reason.

Project Zomboid, PC

Project Zomboid is a fantastic, post-apocalyptic, zombie survival horror game that was first released on Steam in 2011 and continues to evolve to this day.

The aim of the game is to make the most of the resources at your disposal, to live for as long as possible, and to keep the undead masses at bay.

At its heart, Project Zomboid is what you would call a “sandbox” game. Meaning: you can play the game in an open-ended manner, within whatever rules you have chosen, in the many and varied options open to you.

By default, the game offers “proper zombies” – and, by ‘proper’, that means: with fairly acute senses, and the ability to get to you, depending on your visibility and the noises that you make. You can tweak the settings to however you want them – make the zombies harder or lesser, depending on how you want to play. You can play with gore on or off (or high, which is what I normally do). You can use vehicles to drive around in (much fun). You can build fences and outposts. You can forage, cook, collect water, farm your own food, and all manner of other cool things. You can use radios and TVs to try to find allies. You can play single-player or multiplayer. You can even play ‘Challenge’ scenarios that focus the sandbox concept into short, sharp, shock-style storyline type experiences.

In fact: Project Zomboid is a feature-laden joy to play, and – because the game is undergoing a long-term ‘Early Access’ development plan – it is constantly evolving, with regular updates to everything from the graphics to character skills and traits, to every single feature in the game. Every time I dive in to play I see new features being added. Like, recently, I even saw vehicle maintenance added. The level of detail is really quite astounding.

As a zombie film fanatic myself, I can recommend Project Zomboid wholeheartedly – it has a great atmosphere (the music in particular is amazing), is very easy to play, is very well-written, is ace to grab, and is unique in the way it is evolving – both via developer The Indie Stone’s constant hard work (they are small team – not a large company – and the plan has always been to build it up over time), and through the efforts of community modding.

If you like survival horror games you’d be mad to miss out on Project Zomboid, and – for the price (a mere £9.99) – you do get a lot of game for your money. You get a lot of fun. Just don’t moan that it’s in ‘Early Access’ – that is the crux of the idea behind the development of the game! In my mind: only idiots complain about PZ being “unfinished”. And don’t moan if your ‘treasured’ character dies either. In Project Zomboid: death is inevitable!

Midwinter, Atari ST

Mike Singleton‘s 1989 release, Midwinter, is a classic action strategy game with a mixture of early 3D polygonal graphics and 16-colour 2D graphics.

The game takes place in a post-apocalypse 2099, after a devastating meteor strike has left the earth in the grips of another ice age.

In Midwinter you play as John Stark, a militia commander whose mission it is to recruit local people and start an uprising against forces led by a megalomaniacal soldier called General Masters. Using a map, you ski, drive and fly your way around the island of Midwinter, looking for recruits. Some of the more useful recruits will only allow themselves to be recruited by certain people, so a careful plan is required to get them onside.

Midwinter is a fantastic game, but it does take some getting used to, and completing the game is a bit of a challenge. Well worth a go though.

Rage, PC

id Software‘s fantastic post-apocalyptic shooter Rage was first released by Bethesda in 2010.

The game generally divides games-players, although in my opinion it is a great First-Person Shooter. And a weapon-fetishist’s wet dream… Not only are the weapon models some of the best I’ve ever seen, but when a new weapon is introduced into the game the way the main character handles it and shows it off is something to behold.

Rage really isn’t a game for people who hate guns…

But id Software has always been the leading developer when it comes to weapons in First-Person Shooter games, and Rage cements that fact. At least in my mind.

That aside: Rage is also a very interesting mix of shoot ’em up and RPG. It has RPG elements that open the game up a little more, and brilliant driving sections too. You spend quite a bit of time driving from one settlement, or location, to the next, and are often under attack while in transit. I really like the driving sections. And there are online multiplayer races too. Although – in reality – the driving sections are just an off-shoot of the main game. Which is: high-octane, first-person blasting action. In an amazing, scary and dark 3D environment.

It might be getting on a bit now, but Rage is still capable of showing its gaming class.
