Desert Strike, Megadrive/Genesis
Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf is a classic helicopter action game, developed and published by Electronic Arts for the Sega Megadrive in 1992.
It is known for its easy-to-play but hard-to-master gameplay, and for its controversial ‘Gulf War’ storyline.
Herzog, MSX
This obscure Japanese action game is a prototype of one of the first ever real-time strategy games – Herzog Zwei on the Sega Megadrive – and it is also one of the best games you can play on an MSX.
Herzog was developed and published on disk for the MSX2 by Techno Soft (nee, Tecno Soft) in 1988.
Stonkers, ZX Spectrum
This 1983 release from Imagine Software is one of the earliest examples of a Real-Time Strategy game ever made.
It might not look like much, but Stonkers is an important game, and designer/programmer John Gibson probably never even realised it at the time.
Thunder Blade, Arcade
Thunder Blade is a single-player helicopter combat game that debuted in arcades in 1987, courtesy of Sega. It combines overhead shooting sections with third-person, ‘over-the-shoulder’ shooting sections and it features lots of impressive graphical scaling effects on the buildings and enemies.

Aliens versus Predator 2, PC
Not to be confused with Alien vs. Predator from British developer Rebellion, this gaming sequel was created by Monolith Productions and published by Sierra On-Line in 2001.
Whatever you think about the AvP series you can’t disagree that the concept does work extremely well as a video game, and this first-person shooter arguably proves that.
Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri, PC
Looking Glass Technologies are probably best known for their Ultima Underworld series of games, but this 1996 tactical shooter from them is also a retro-gaming classic.
Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri is a first-person, futuristic ‘combat suit’ type action game with an interesting mix of styles.
