F.E.A.R., PC
A classic first-person survival horror game from Monolith Productions and first released in 2005.
F.E.A.R. unfortunately came out not long after Half-Life 2, so was kind of drowned-out in the attention Valve‘s release was getting. It’s not as good as Half-Life 2 – to be quite frank – but is definitely up there with the best releases of that year.
Clive Barker’s Undying, PC
British author Clive Barker was a writer and creative consultant on this 2001 Windows/Mac release.
Clive Barker’s Undying is a survival horror, first-person shooter – with magic – and was developed by EA Los Angeles. The game sold poorly on release and a planned multiplayer patch and sequel were both canned.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto, PC
This obscure 2000 release from Planet Moon Studios and Interplay pretty much sank without a trace on first release – in spite of being a great game. Thankfully, Giants: Citizen Kabuto has been given a new lease of life, thanks to GOG.com (and other outlets) giving it a re-release, and it seems to have found a new audience. Looking at the reviews on GOG.com in particular it seems that this game is receiving a lot of love.
Far Cry 2, PC
Far Cry 2 first came out in 2008 and is a first-person shoot ’em up set in a war-torn, fictitious African country. It was developed by Ubisoft Montreal.
The game mixes open world exploration with brutal violence, best-in-class combat, and also showcases many exciting action game concepts – such as great vehicle use and a large arsenal of weapons to choose from.
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, PC
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings was first released in 2011 by Polish developer CD Projekt Red.
It is the predecessor to the smash hit The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and also follows the exploits of Geralt of Rivia – a Witcher, or monster-hunter – on a series of open-world adventures.
Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, PlayStation
Abe’s Oddysee is the first in a quadrilogy of games that fall under the Oddworld series banner, and the first game to feature Abe – a likeable alien slave who is on the run from his captors.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, PC
First released in 2015, CD Projekt Red‘s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a third-person, open world Role-Playing Game that is based on a series of novels by the Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.
Obviously it is the third instalment in the series (and last, according to the developers), and in it you play a monster-hunting detective badass called Geralt – a Witcher; a carrier of two swords (one steel, for killing humans, and one silver, for killing monsters); and a superhuman solver of problems with acute senses and no emotions.
VVVVVV, PC
Terry Cavanagh‘s VVVVVV is an extremely smart-but-simple platform/indie game that feels a lot like a Commodore 64 game from the ’80s, although it was actually released in 2010.
