Zombi, Atari ST

A strange game, and Ubisoft‘s first ever video game release;  the Amstrad original coming out in 1986 and this conversion in 1990.

Zombi is a clear appropriation [ie. lift] of George A. Romero‘s classic 1979 zombie film, Dawn of the Dead, although I don’t think Ubisoft actually bought an official license for it. They just changed all the names of the characters…

F.E.A.R., PC

A classic first-person survival horror game from Monolith Productions and first released in 2005.

F.E.A.R. unfortunately came out not long after Half-Life 2, so was kind of drowned-out in the attention Valve‘s release was getting. It’s not as good as Half-Life 2 – to be quite frank – but is definitely up there with the best releases of that year.

Shadow Warrior, PC

The original Shadow Warrior was released for PC MS-DOS by GT Interactive in 1997.

Team Fortress 2, PC

I remember Team Fortress 2 launching back in 2007. The wait had been immense… I forget how many years we waited; around seven or eight years after it was first announced, until finally getting to play it.

To me, the game was a bit of a let down. It was all a bit too cartoony for my liking. Nonetheless I have played and enjoyed Team Fortress 2 on occasion over the years, and took some grabs along the way.

These grabs do say what year they were taken, and do show Team Fortress 2 as it evolved over the space of a decade.

Far Cry 2, PC

Far Cry 2 first came out in 2008 and is a first-person shoot ’em up set in a war-torn, fictitious African country. It was developed by Ubisoft Montreal.

The game mixes open world exploration with brutal violence, best-in-class combat, and also showcases many exciting action game concepts – such as great vehicle use and a large arsenal of weapons to choose from.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Super Nintendo

This brilliant single and multi-player overhead shooter by LucasArts is a parody of every single horror and sci-fi film you’ve ever seen.

Chainsaws, zombies, UFOs, mummies, werewolves, demonic babies, spiders, shopping malls – you name it, the game will throw it at you during at least one of its 48 different stages.

Aliens vs. Predator, Arcade

This 1994 arcade game from Capcom is a ridiculously over-the-top beat ’em up in the style of Cadillacs and Dinosaurs – side-scrolling, all-action, with gigantic sprites jumping around all over the place.

Another World, Megadrive/Genesis

There are countless versions of Another WorldDelphine Software‘s 1991, sci-fi masterpiece – but the Megadrive version (shown here) is arguably the best of them.

Rendering Ranger: R2, Super Nintendo

Rendering Ranger: R2 is a rare run-and-gun game from the end of the life of the Super Nintendo. It was published by Virgin Interactive in Japan only in 1995. Which is strange for a German game…
