GameCube Special

The Nintendo GameCube was initially released in Japan and North America in 2001, and Europe in 2002. It is a sixth-generation video games console, with a 32-bit IBM PowerPC CPU and an ATI “Flipper” GPU.

The GameCube was praised for its controller and high-quality game library, but criticised for its lack of multimedia features, and lack of third-party support compared to its competitors (PlayStation 2 and XBox).

Bomberman Generation (Battle Mode), GameCube

Here’s a separate set of grabs of Bomberman Generation Battle Mode for the GameCube. The reason I think it deserves this extra set is because the Battle Mode in Bomberman Generation is arguably the best Battle Mode in any Bomberman game, and because it also has a variety of different play modes that I haven’t seen in a Bomberman game before. And it also looks great, too. So enjoy these bonus screenshots!

Bomberman Generation, GameCube

Bomberman Generation was developed and published by Hudson Soft – exclusively for the GameCube – in Japan in 2002. Vivendi/Majesco took care of publishing in the West.

Dragon’s Lair 3D, GameCube

Known as “Dragon’s Lair 3D: Return to the Lair” in North America, this fully-3D action adventure is a reimagining of Don Bluth‘s classic laserdisc arcade game, Dragon’s Lair. And it works brilliantly well. Dragon’s Lair 3D was published for the GameCube by THQ in Europe, and Encore, Inc. in North America, in 2002. It was also released for PlayStation 2, Windows and XBox.

The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age, GameCube

The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age is a turn-based level-grinder, developed by EA Redwood Shores and published by Electronic Arts in 2004, loosely-based on the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings trilogy of films. It is NOT based on J.R.R. Tolkien‘s famous novel, because the rights for the book were held by Vivendi Universal Games at the time, although Electronic Arts did hold the rights to make video game adaptations of the New Line Cinema films. Which is a little confusing, but the plot in this game is a non-canonical story that runs parallel to the narrative of the films. Anything from the novels not specifically mentioned or depicted in the films could not be represented in this game.

Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death, GameCube

The Nintendo GameCube version of Dredd vs. Death was published by Evolved Games in North America and Sierra in Europe in 2003. It was developed by Rebellion, the owner of the 2000AD brand.

Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death is a first-person shooter that at least tries to make good use of the Judge Dredd license, and to a large extent it succeeds quite well.

Mr. Driller Drill Land, GameCube

Developed by Project Driller (an internal, dedicated team within Namco), Mr. Driller Drill Land was released exclusively for the GameCube in Japan in 2002 and is the fifth instalment in the Mr. Driller series. And it is arguably the best game in the series.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, GameCube

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was developed and published by Nintendo for the GameCube and Wii in 2006 and is an unusual, beautifully-produced game with stunning visuals and evocative gameplay. It was the final first-party release from Nintendo for the GameCube.

Twilight Princess features involving, varied, and ever-evolving gameplay, with a more mature-looking Link in the title role (possibly in response to criticism of its predecessor, 2002’s The Wind Waker, due to its cartoony, cel-shaded graphics). The story involves Link trying to stop Hyrule from being engulfed by a corrupt parallel dimension called The Twilight Realm.

Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, GameCube

Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness is the successor to Pokémon Colosseum and is another third-generation spin-off from the main Pokémon series. It was developed by Genius Sonority and published by The Pokémon Company exclusively for the Nintendo GameCube in 2005.

Pokémon Colosseum, GameCube

Pokémon Colosseum was developed by Genius Sonority and published by The Pokémon Company in 2003 in Japan and 2004 everywhere else. It is not considered part of the main Pokémon series, but is a third-generation spin-off made exclusively for the Nintendo GameCube.
