Silent Hill: Origins, PlayStation 2

Silent Hill: Origins – the fifth part of the Silent Hill series – was developed by British company Climax Action (with the help of some outsourcing), and not Konami, so was the first Silent Hill game not developed in Japan. It was initially released for the PlayStation Portable in 2007 and this PlayStation 2 port followed later, in 2008.

Carrier Command, ZX Spectrum

The ZX Spectrum conversion of Realtime Software‘s classic Carrier Command is arguably even better than the 16-bit originals. Mostly because it’s been tweaked a little to accommodate it on the humble Speccy, and as a result it plays really well as a strategy game, with extra action elements. Carrier Command on the Spectrum is for 128K machines only and was first published by Rainbird in 1989.

Gorf, ColecoVision

A rare home port of Nutting Associatesfamous 1981 arcade game, Gorf. Rare because the original developers licensed both Space Invaders and Galaxian for inclusion in the original Gorf, which restricted its reach in home markets (because anyone wanting to release the game on another system would also have to license both games to make it legal).

Flight Simulator II, Atari ST

Flight Simulator II, by Sublogic, is an early, pioneering flight simulation game designed and written by Bruce Artwick and first released for the Apple II in 1983. This enhanced Atari ST conversion was first released in 1986.

Carmageddon, Game Boy Color

Believe it or not: the Game Boy Color has a version of the infamous Carmageddon available for it, with overhead scrolling streets and tiny pedestrian zombies that you can run down in a variety of different cars. It was developed by Aqua Pacific and first published by Sales Curve Interactive in Europe and Titus in North America in 2000.

Also known as Fantasy Zone Gear, this handheld conversion of the 1986 arcade game was first released in 1991 and was developed by Sanritsu and published by Sega.

Doom, Super Nintendo

The Super Nintendo conversion of id Software‘s classic Doom was developed by Sculptured Software and published by Williams Electronics in 1995. It uses the Super FX chip to help render the 3D graphics, but in truth: even with the extra processing power it’s a pretty poor effort.

Fort Apocalypse, Commodore 64

The Commodore 64 version of the classic Atari 8-bit helicopter shooter, Fort Apocalypse, was ported by Joe Vierra and published by Synapse Software in North America in 1982. US Gold published the game in Europe slightly later.

Cannon Fodder, Game Boy Color

Believe it or not: Sensible Software‘s classic Amiga game, Cannon Fodder, was also released for the Game Boy Color, and it’s actually not a bad game at all. It was developed by Sensible Software themselves – so is very authentic to the original – and was published by Codemasters in 2000.
