Asteroids, Atari 2600

Asteroids on the Atari 2600 is a conversion of the classic 1979 arcade game, written by Bradley G. Stewart of Atari, Inc. and first published by Sears, Roebuck and Co. in 1981.

The game features three different game variations: standard play, competition, and team. Standard is for one or two players with each taking turns when a player’s ship is destroyed. In competition mode two players appear on-screen at the same time and can compete for points, and can shoot each other; each player having their own set of lives. In team mode two players appear on-screen at the same time but cannot shoot each other and play cooperatively; players share a pool of lives.

There are four difficulty settings: novice, intermediate, advanced, and expert, and that’s really about it for features. This is a simple but playable conversion of the rock-shooting game, and not much of a stand-out game on the system, although it did sell a large number of cartridges upon its original release.
