Originally released in arcades in Japan in 1989, Quarth became a cult hit when it was released for the MSX2 in 1990.
Quarth is basically part vertically-scrolling shoot ’em up, and part Tetris.

Super Mario Kart, Super Nintendo

Darkwatch, XBox
Developed by High Moon Studios, Darkwatch is a First-Person Shooter/survival horror game that crosses the American “Wild West” with ghosts, zombies and werewolves and that kind of material.
When it was first released, back in 2005, is was quite impressive for the time. In this day and age Darkwatch looks and plays very simply, but is not entirely without its redeeming features.
Rock n’ Roll Racing, Super Nintendo
Rock n’ Roll Racing is a brilliant isometric, combat-based racing game by Silicon & Synapse – now Blizzard Entertainment – and was first released for the Super Nintendo way back in 1993.
Twinkle Star Sprites, Neo Geo
SNK‘s Twinkle Star Sprites was released for the Neo Geo in 1996 and is an interesting mix of vertically-scrolling shoot ’em up and head-to-head puzzle game. Yes, I know that sounds weird, and this game IS weird, but weird in all the right ways…
Road Rash II, Megadrive/Genesis
Road Rash II (1992) is an excellent continuation of the Road Rash theme, this time with more variety (you can now kick, as well as punch and use weapons, such as bike chains), and simultaneous two-player, split-screen play.
Hired Guns, Amiga
Psygnosis‘ Hired Guns is an innovative, squad-based tactical action game where the player takes control of a team of four mercenaries (from a pool of twelve), each of which has their own viewpoint in the play area.
Pitstop II, Commodore 64
It might be considered primitive by today’s standards, but back in 1984 when Pitstop II was first released, it really raised the bar for arcade-style racing games. That is: racing games that are fun to play, rather than being as realistic as possible.

It is debatable what the best Mario Kart game of all time is.
Ballblazer, Commodore 64
Lucasfilm Games released Ballblazer upon unsuspecting audiences back in March 1984 (actually, on Atari 8-bit systems first).
The game is a futuristic one-on-one sports game, with two players battling it out, from inside the confines of a small, floating vehicle, called a Rotofoil.
