FEZ is a wonderful, colourful 2D platform game that utilises an interesting three-dimensional screen-flipping technique as part of the game mechanics.

Dungeon Master, PC
Although the mighty Dungeon Master did come out on the Atari ST first, its best incarnation can be found on the PC, in MS-DOS.
Black Crypt, Amiga
Black Crypt is the first game developed by Raven Software. It’s an Amiga exclusive, initially published by Electronic Arts in 1992. It could be argued that it’s also an unashamed clone of FTL’s Dungeon Master, but it is at least an exceptional one.
Far Cry, PC
Far Cry is one of the greatest first-person shooters ever made. Sure: it looks a little simplistic now, but at the time of release (2004) it was a revelation.
Super Ghouls ‘N Ghosts, Super Nintendo
This suped-up version of Capcom‘s classic Ghouls ‘N Ghosts on the Super Nintendo is a massive amount of fun to play!
Splash Lake, PC Engine
Actually, Splash Lake is a PC Engine CD game, and was released in 1991 on CD-ROM only. Which is a pity because it’s so much fun to play – it deserves more attention.
Typhoon Thompson, Amiga
Dan Gorlin‘s Typhoon Thompson in Search For the Sea Child is a smart little title to play in an emulator now, although you do have to get the controls right to enjoy it properly. It’s a mouse and keyboard game but can be gotten to work with a joypad, if you’re persistent.
