Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows, PlayStation 2

Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows is the seventh game in the Gauntlet series, and is a much better attempt to bring the game into the 3D gaming realm than Gauntlet Legends or Gauntlet Dark Legacy, the previous two games in the series. It was developed by Midway Studios San Diego and published by Midway Games for the PlayStation 2 and XBox in 2005. An XBox 360 version was released in 2008.

Katamari Damacy, PlayStation 2

Katamari Damacy – meaning “clump spirit” – is a third-person action game that involves rolling-up items onto a ball called a ‘Katamari‘. You play as ‘The Prince‘ – a small, green boy who is the son of ‘The King of All Cosmos‘ and who pushes the Katamari around the landscape, making items stick to it, which in turn makes it grow in size. The aim of the game is roll-up a Katamari of a certain size in each of the game’s various levels.

Silent Hill: Origins, PlayStation 2

Silent Hill: Origins – the fifth part of the Silent Hill series – was developed by British company Climax Action (with the help of some outsourcing), and not Konami, so was the first Silent Hill game not developed in Japan. It was initially released for the PlayStation Portable in 2007 and this PlayStation 2 port followed later, in 2008.

Silent Hill 4: The Room, PlayStation 2

Silent Hill 4: The Room was once again developed by Team Silent (an internal dev team at Konami Tokyo), and was first published by Konami in 2004. The word on the street is that Silent Hill 4 initially began life as a concept outside of the Silent Hill series and was later made canon when the devs decided to incorporate it. It plays differently to the previous three Silent Hill games, but does have the same DNA, mixing first-person exploration with the familiar third-person survival horror gameplay.

Silent Hill 3, PlayStation 2

Whereas the second Silent Hill was more of a ‘spiritual successor’ to the first game, the third Silent Hill is a direct sequel to Silent Hill [one], continuing the story, but with new characters, enemies and locations. As well as re-visiting places familiar to those who’ve played the first game.

Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death, PlayStation 2

Released in 2003 for PC, PlayStation 2, GameCube and XBox, Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death is a first-person shoot ’em up developed by Rebellion and based on the infamous 2000AD comic character of Judge Dredd. And – so far (at the time of writing) – it is really the only Judge Dredd game that does the source material any real justice (pun intended). The game is almost twenty years old now, but it’s still worth playing nowadays.

Grand Theft Auto III, PlayStation 2

DMA Design‘s Grand Theft Auto III was where the GTA series really took off. It was released in October 2001 via Rockstar Games and took the series in a whole new direction, with a third-person street view perspective, rather than the overhead view of the previous two games.

King’s Field IV, PlayStation 2
