HAL Laboratory‘s Adventures of Lolo 3 is a fantastic, cute and extremely playable puzzle game, first released for the Nintendo Famicom in Japan in 1991 (actually December 26th 1990, but we’ll say 1991).

Mother 3, Game Boy Advance
The third and final game in the Mother series, Mother 3, was released in Japan only in 2006 for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance.
Nintendo published the game, with development by Brownie Brown and HAL Laboratory – directed by Nobuyuki Inhoue and written by series creator Shigesato Itoi.
EarthBound, Super Nintendo
This 1994 cult classic Super Nintendo level-grinder was originally titled “Mother 2” in its native Japan – later changed in English-speaking territories to EarthBound.
This was due to the fact that no one outside of Japan had seen the first Mother (released in 1989 on the NES) and the bigwigs at Nintendo of America worried that it might confuse people.
EarthBound Zero, NES
This classic NES game was initially released in Japan in 1989 under the title of Mother.

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages, Game Boy Color
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages was released as a twin title with The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons for the Game Boy Color in 2001.
Both games were developed simultaneously by Flagship (a division of Capcom) and both games are essentially companion pieces that can be played separately, or linked, so that what you do in one affects what happens in the other.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX, Game Boy Color
The Game Boy Color has a brilliant remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. It was first released in 1998 and features an added colour-themed dungeon not seen in the original monochrome release.

Cave Noire, Game Boy
Konami‘s Cave Noire is a smart little handheld ‘Roguelike’ dungeon crawler for the Nintendo Game Boy that was first released in Japan in 1991. Cave Noire did not receive a release outside of its native country, which is a pity because it’s an excellent game.
Tetris, Game Boy
It would be remiss of me to celebrate the Nintendo Game Boy and not mention Tetris.
Tetris was the ‘pack-in’ game with the original black and white Game Boy, and probably helped sell a few million units in itself.
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, Game Boy
This third game in the Super Mario Land series was the first Nintendo game to give Wario his own title, and also feature him as a playable character. After this, the Wario games went on to become a successful series in their own right.
