I’ve covered a few old arcade shooters already on here, but this ‘special’ is meant to fill in a few gaps. Particularly with regards to pioneering video games of the early ‘colour era’ of arcade machines.
Bubble Bobble, Arcade
Taito‘s Bubble Bobble first came out in arcades in 1986. Its colourful, jolly, platform action proved a sensation among gamers, and it has since gone on to earn “legendary” status in the retro gaming community.
Cavelon, Arcade
Cavelon is an early colour arcade game from Jetsoft and was first released in 1983.
R-Type, Arcade
Released into video game arcades in 1987, Irem‘s side-scrolling shoot ’em up, R-Type, is considered by many to be the best of its type (pun intended).
Mr. Driller, PlayStation
Namco‘s Mr. Driller first appeared in arcades in 1999, and this PlayStation version (pretty much the arcade version, plus a bunch of extras) came out in 2000.
Lode Runner, Arcade
The 1984 arcade version of Lode Runner was made by Irem Corporation of Japan and features, bigger, cuter graphics than the Broderbund original, but still the same great gameplay.
Aliens vs. Predator, Arcade
This 1994 arcade game from Capcom is a ridiculously over-the-top beat ’em up in the style of Cadillacs and Dinosaurs – side-scrolling, all-action, with gigantic sprites jumping around all over the place.
Art of Fighting 3: The Path of the Warrior, Neo Geo
The original Art of Fighting 3 by SNK came out in arcades – and on the Neo Geo AES – in 1996.
