Released as “Volfied” in arcades, this sequel to the original Qix was re-named Ultimate Qix for its Sega Genesis release in North America in 1991. And – let’s face it – “Volfied” is a crappy name anyway, so it’s no great loss.

Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes, PC Engine
The Legend of Heroes is the sixth game in the Dragon Slayer series, and the first in The Legend of Heroes franchise. It was developed by Falcom and released initially for the PC-88 – in Japan – in 1989. The PC Engine CD version was localised into English by Hudson Soft and released for the TurboGrafx-CD in North America by Turbo Technologies in 1991. That’s the version I’m showing here.

Sorcerian: Dragon Slayer V, MSX
The fifth episode in the Dragon Slayer series – Sorcerian – was originally released in 1987 for the PC-88. The MSX2 version was ported by Tierheit and published – in Japan only – by Brother Industries (on their Takeru label) in 1991. A fan translation into English is available, but I did notice that there are still a few untranslated passages in the game.
Lagrange Point, NES/Famicom
Released in Japan only by Konami in 1991, Lagrange Point is a science fantasy JRPG set on a human colony ship in space (located at the Lagrangian points between Earth and the Sun). Communications are lost between colonies, so a search team is sent in to investigate.
Paperboy II, Game Gear
The Game Gear version of Paperboy 2 (aka Paperboy II) was ported by Manley & Associates and published by Tengen in 1993. While it does at least try to emulate the superior Megadrive/Genesis version (and not the inferior Mindscape ports), it falls flat for a number of reasons.
Paperboy 2, Super Nintendo
Paperboy 2 on the Super Nintendo was developed and published by Mindscape in 1991. And – for some reason – it doesn’t compare to the Megadrive/Genesis version, which I think is superior.
Paperboy 2, NES/Famicom
The NES version of Paperboy 2 was ported by Eastridge Technology and published by Mindscape in North America only in 1991. It’s a playable game with some good ideas, but is frustratingly difficult to play at times.
Paperboy 2, PC
The sequel to the classic Atari arcade game, Paperboy, Paperboy 2 was developed by Manley & Associates and published by Mindscape in 1991 and only appeared on home systems (it did not find its way into arcades). The game is generally considered to be a bit of a failure overall, although it does have some good ideas in it.
Xybots, Atari Lynx
The Lynx port of Atari Games‘ 1987 arcade game, Xybots, was developed by NuFX, Inc. and first released by Atari Corporation in 1991. It is a futuristic third-person shooter where you explore a maze full of deadly robots, to ultimately confront the ‘Master Xybot‘ and defeat it.
Impossamole, PC Engine
The 1991 PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 version of Gremlin Graphics‘ classic Monty Mole game is a rare treat: it’s a British-developed PC Engine game, and an alright one at that. And, believe it or not, but the PC Engine version of the game is the one that’s currently available on Steam and GOG.com.
