Doom, PC

id Software‘s hit shooter, Doom, blew the roof off the gaming world when it was first released in 1993.

It was the first First-Person Shooter that moved really fast and smoothly, and gave you a real sense of ‘being there’ when you played it.

F.E.A.R., PC

A classic first-person survival horror game from Monolith Productions and first released in 2005.

F.E.A.R. unfortunately came out not long after Half-Life 2, so was kind of drowned-out in the attention Valve‘s release was getting. It’s not as good as Half-Life 2 – to be quite frank – but is definitely up there with the best releases of that year.

Daikatana, PC

John Romero‘s Daikatana is one of the most infamous games of all time.

Back in 2000, when the game was first released, it was heavily hyped as “the next great shooter”. And – as Daikatana was being designed by one of the co-creators of the original Doom and Quake – everyone had high hopes for it.

Developed by High Moon Studios, Darkwatch is a First-Person Shooter/survival horror game that crosses the American “Wild West” with ghosts, zombies and werewolves and that kind of material.

When it was first released, back in 2005, is was quite impressive for the time. In this day and age Darkwatch looks and plays very simply, but is not entirely without its redeeming features.

Metroid Prime, GameCube

The fifth game in Nintendo‘s famous “Metroid” series, and the first to use 3D graphics, Metroid Prime follows the well-worn gameplay path of the earlier Metroid games (that is: have all your equipment; lose all your equipment; have to find all your equipment again) and again sees you playing as Samus Aran, a female ex-soldier with a powered exoskeleton.

BioShock Infinite, PC

BioShock Infinite (2013) is the third game in the BioShock series, and it is one a hell of a game! It is a bright, imaginative, funny, touching, emotional, violent and downright surprising adventure, set in a steampunk-style cloud city called Columbia.

Half-Life 2, PC

Half-Life 2 was first released by Valve Corporation in 2004. It was such a giant leap forward for games in general – not just first-person shooters – that its reverberations are still being felt today.

Half-Life (one) is a brilliant game, but Half-Life 2 completely blows it out of the water.
