Known as Dead ‘n’ Furious in Europe, but I’m going with the North American title for this Nintendo DS rail shooter – a touch-screen tribute to Sega‘s infamous arcade game House of the Dead. Only the title reference doesn’t work properly because there’s no “of” in it… I would’ve gone for ‘Touch of the Dead‘, which doesn’t really make sense but is better than what they used, because it at least references the original game properly. Aliens versus Predator 2, PC
Not to be confused with Alien vs. Predator from British developer Rebellion, this gaming sequel was created by Monolith Productions and published by Sierra On-Line in 2001.
Whatever you think about the AvP series you can’t disagree that the concept does work extremely well as a video game, and this first-person shooter arguably proves that.
Gunfright, ZX Spectrum
Another isometric action adventure from Ultimate Play The Game, this one with a Wild West theme.
Gunfright was first released in 1985 and uses the Filmation II Engine as first seen in Nightshade.
Serious Sam: The Second Encounter, PC
This 2002 sequel to Serious Sam is very similar to the first game. The first level even has the same monsters, but does blast through them quickly to get to the new stuff. And there is quite a bit of new stuff. Weapons, environments, enemies, bosses, et cetera.
Serious Sam: The First Encounter, PC
As ‘generic’ first-person shooters go, Serious Sam is up there with the best of them.
And – let’s face it – the market is flooded with generic first-person shooters…

The 1996 sequel to Crusader: No Remorse, Crusader: No Regret is more of the same, but with more new weapons, more new enemies, more new moves – more of everything, really.
Crusader: No Remorse, PC
Crusader: No Remorse was first released by Origin Systems in 1995.
It’s a violent, isometric shooter with a futuristic setting. In it you play a kind of ‘super soldier’ called a Silencer (how poetic…) who changes sides when his superiors try to have him killed after a botched mission.
Shadow Warrior 2, PC
A modern remake of the classic 3D Realms shooter is a great idea – the original adventures of Lo Wang (the lead character in the Shadow Warrior games, and the character you play in this) were a lot of fun.
Cannon Fodder 2, Amiga
Cannon Fodder 2 is for players who want more Cannon Fodder action, and simply did not get enough of its predecessor. Sadly, it’s not quite as good as the first game, so may cause an overdose…
Cannon Fodder, Atari ST
Sensible Software‘s classic Cannon Fodder is still the same great overhead war game on the Atari ST as it was on the original platform – the Amiga. Although it has to be said that it’s not quite as good as the Amiga version…
