Shining In The Darkness, Megadrive/Genesis
When I first played Shining In The Darkness – a 1991 party-based Role-Playing Game for the Sega Megadrive/Genesis, developed by Climax Entertainment and published by Sega – I was ready to dismiss it, because of the unattractive, ‘cartoony’ graphics, the clunky interface, and the generic script. But after some determined play – admittedly: in an emulator, and using quicksaves – it became apparent that this was no ‘throwaway’ level-grinder. It was in fact something quite special…
Todd’s Adventures in Slime World, Megadrive/Genesis
Todd’s Adventures in Slime World is a game developed by Epyx and first released on the Atari Lynx in 1990.
This Megadrive/Genesis version came later – in 1991 – and in my mind is better than the original, because you can see more of the play area in this version (because the graphics are higher resolution), and there’s also simultaneous split-screen play.

Landstalker, Megadrive/Genesis
Released in its native Japan in 1992, and everywhere else in 1993, Landstalker is a memorable real-time action adventure in a well-defined fantasy world. The Megadrive‘s answer to Zelda, in some respects.
Road Rash II, Megadrive/Genesis

Road Rash, Megadrive/Genesis
Electronic Arts‘ 1991 release, Road Rash, is a fantastic motorbike racing game where the riders can actually punch each other as they are zooming down the roads.
This is obviously a very dirty trick to either knock other riders off their mount, or to gain some other kind of advantage, but it is allowed in the context of this game and it is hilarious!
Snake Rattle ‘n’ Roll, Megadrive/Genesis
Rare‘s classic isometric action game, Snake Rattle ‘n’ Roll, was first released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990. This Sega Megadrive/Genesis port came later, in 1993.
Flicky, Megadrive/Genesis
Ports of Sega‘s own classic arcade games were often fab on the Megadrive/Genesis, and Flicky is one of the best.
Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament, Megadrive/Genesis
One of the best games on the Sega Megadrive/Genesis, Micro Machines 2 (1994), by Codemasters, is a super-fast, overhead racing game for up to four players. It is the sequel to Micro Machines on NES.

Shadowrun, Megadrive/Genesis
I can’t write about the other Shadowrun games without mentioning the Sega Megadrive/Genesis game, first released by Sega in 1994.
