This incredibly tough roguelike shooter is a wonderful game. It looks fantastic, scrolling along, with an overhead 3D view, but with 2D sprites in the playfield. Graphically Teleglitch is clever.

Stunt Island, PC
This excellent MS-DOS title, released by Disney Interactive in 1992, literally allows you to set up stunts, film them, and then edit them together into an independently-playable movie afterwards.
Oblivion, PC
Or, to give the game its full title: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion – the fourth game in the popular Elder Scrolls series.
Super House of Dead Ninjas, PC
This lovely ‘modern retro’ game has been made to look and play like a Super Nintendo game. And I mean that as a compliment.
Quake II, PC
Limbo, PC
Dark and disturbing, Playdead’s Limbo is a small boy’s journey into a world filled with deadly traps and killer monsters.
Elite Plus, PC
There were many versions of the classic space combat/trading game, Elite. The best, though, is arguably Elite Plus on the PC in VGA. Made by Chris Sawyer of Realtime Software in 1991.
Sunless Sea, PC
Sunless Sea was developed by Failbetter Games with the help of a Kickstarter campaign in 2015.
FEZ, PC
FEZ is a wonderful, colourful 2D platform game that utilises an interesting three-dimensional screen-flipping technique as part of the game mechanics.
The Magic Circle, PC
Hugely fun, satirical 2015 indie game about playing a broken RPG.
The Magic Circle cleverly mixes modern high res graphics with retro DOS-style graphics, and is something of a first on that front.
