The third game in the Metroid series is a top class Super Nintendo classic.
Super Metroid (1994) is more detailed than both previous Metroid games put together, although the basic structure is the same – explore various levels to find your latent abilities, all of which have been lost (“Why does this keep happening in Metroid games?” you may ask. “It’s in the script,” is my answer).
The second ever Metroid game first appeared on the Nintendo Game Boy in 1991.
Metroid II: Return of Samus is a brilliant continuation of the first Metroid game. The animation of lead character Samus is much more gritty and realistic in this game, compared to the NES original. And the monochromatic graphics actually seem to add to the eerie atmosphere, rather than hamper the game at all.
This first Metroid, for the Nintendo Entertainment System, was initially released in 1986 and remains the toughest episode in the whole series to date.
Data East‘s Midnight Resistance (1989) is a side-scrolling run-and-gun shooter with a difference – you can rotate the hips of the soldier you’re controlling and shoot in eight different directions, which makes for interesting and unique gameplay.
Sega made the (frankly bonkers) arcade game Moonwalker – starring Michael Jackson – based on his 1988 film of the same name.
Nazca Corporation‘s infamous run-and-gun blaster – Metal Slug – was first released in arcades in 1996, before following as a cartridge on SNK‘s cutting edge home console the Neo Geo AES.
Blackthorne is an early Blizzard game, first released on the Super Nintendo in 1994.
Another arcade classic from Capcom – Bionic Commando. A run-and-gun game from 1987, but with a difference: in this game your guy can fire a grappling hook from his arm and swing from location to location.
Commando is a classic vertically-scrolling run-and-gun game, first released by Capcom into arcades in 1985.
Ghouls ‘N Ghosts is the amazing 1988 sequel to Ghosts ‘N Goblins.
Although not quite as difficult as its predecessor, Ghouls ‘N Ghosts is another tough horror-themed, fantasy run-and-gun type game, but with much better graphics than the first game, and some great set pieces and boss battles.
