Half-Life 2, PC
Half-Life 2 was first released by Valve Corporation in 2004. It was such a giant leap forward for games in general – not just first-person shooters – that its reverberations are still being felt today.
Half-Life (one) is a brilliant game, but Half-Life 2 completely blows it out of the water.
Kururin Squash!, GameCube
I only discovered this marvellous game recently, on the back of posting screenshots of its predecessor on here. But I’m extremely glad I did, because Kururin Squash! is a fantastic update of the same game mechanics that made Kuru Kuru Kururin so compelling to play: guiding a spinning stick around a series of mad, twisting mazes.
The Lord of the Rings: The Battle For Middle-Earth, PC
An excellent Real Time Strategy (RTS) game based on the Peter Jackson films (not to mention the brilliant and famous books by JRR Tolkien, on which the films are based), and first released by Electronic Arts in 2004.

Far Cry, PC
Far Cry is one of the greatest first-person shooters ever made. Sure: it looks a little simplistic now, but at the time of release (2004) it was a revelation.
Pikmin 2, GameCube
Nintendo’s 2004 sequel is a brilliant update of the first Pikmin game, with split screen multiplayer, and challenging single-player story modes.
