Pikmin, GameCube

Pikmin was released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2001 and was an instant hit with gamers.

Designed and produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, the first game in the Pikmin series introduces Captain Oilmar, an alien who crash lands on a mysterious planet and where he befriends small creatures called Pikmin who help him rebuild his ship.

The Pikmin come in three different colours. Red Pikmin are stronger than others and are fire resistant. Yellow Pikmin can be thrown higher than the others, and can carry explosive bomb rocks. Blue Pikmin are the only ones who don’t drown in water.

As the game progresses your army of Pikmin grows and you can achieve ever more impressive feats with them. You can have a maximum of 100 Pikmin in the field at any one time though.

Pikmin is rightly regarded as one of the best video games ever made. It is just so well made and so much fun to play that it can’t be missed. If you do miss it, it’s a big gap in your gaming heritage. 🙂

A brilliant sequel, called Pikmin 2, was released for the GameCube in 2004 and introduced two-player into the mix.

  1. Still got this sat on my shelf I think, I remember not getting it for a while though – it looks deceptively simple which I think put me off, but turned out to be thoroughly enjoyable. Never completed it though, wish it’d come to PC so I could pick it up again.
