The successor to the 1983 arcade game Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. was released in Japan and North America in 1985, although it wasn’t released in Europe until 1987.
It is considered by many gamers to be one of the greatest video games of all time, and I wouldn’t dispute that assessment.
Intelligent Systems and Nintendo released this fantastic follow-up to Paper Mario on the GameCube in 2004.

This ColecoVision conversion of Nintendo‘s classic Donkey Kong is famous for a number of reasons.
Paper Mario is a brilliant combat-based RPG developed by Intelligent Systems and released for the Nintendo 64 in 2000.
Released in 1996, Super Mario 64 was one of the first fully-3D platform games to actually work, rather than be a struggle to play.
I would argue that the original 1992 Super Mario Kart on the SNES is still the greatest Mario Kart game of all time.
There have been quite a lot of excellent 2D Mario games over history, which makes the Game Boy Super Mario Land series easy to overlook. All three Super Mario Land games, however, are stunning and unique ‘best-in-class’ examples of what the Game Boy is actually capable of – ie. shifting lots of sprites around the screen, smooth scrolling, great sounds and perfectly responsive controls.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga on the Game Boy Advance is a brilliant mix of platforming and level-grinding.
The ‘twist’ in this game is that you control both Mario and Luigi simultaneously during the game, and can switch between each character – or use them in tandem – to solve certain puzzles.

For me it is a toss-up between Super Mario Sunshine (2002) and Super Mario World (1990) on the SNES.
