Geoff Crammond‘s The Sentinel (aka The Sentry in North America) is a strange chess-like game where you have to sneak up on an overseeing watcher, who is perched high on a platform, overlooking the play area, and absorb him before he does the same to you.

The Lord of the Rings: The Battle For Middle-Earth, PC
An excellent Real Time Strategy (RTS) game based on the Peter Jackson films (not to mention the brilliant and famous books by JRR Tolkien, on which the films are based), and first released by Electronic Arts in 2004.

Field of Fire, Commodore 64
Field of Fire is my favourite of the ancient SSI turn-based strategy games on the Commodore 64 because it is so easy to get up and running and playing, and commanding a platoon.
