Old Arcade Shooters Special

I have a fondness for old arcade shoot ’em ups. Particularly the first colour arcade shooters of the early Eighties. Just hearing the sound effects takes me back to my childhood… Playing Space Invaders at the local leisure centre. Galaxian at the video lending library. Phoenix at the seaside…

I’ve covered a few old arcade shooters already on here, but this ‘special’ is meant to fill in a few gaps. Particularly with regards to pioneering video games of the early ‘colour era’ of arcade machines.

Taito‘s Bubble Bobble first came out in arcades in 1986. Its colourful, jolly, platform action proved a sensation among gamers, and it has since gone on to earn “legendary” status in the retro gaming community.

This 1994 arcade game from Capcom is a ridiculously over-the-top beat ’em up in the style of Cadillacs and Dinosaurs – side-scrolling, all-action, with gigantic sprites jumping around all over the place.

Williams Electronicssavage and heart-pounding single-screen shoot ’em up, Robotron: 2084 (1982), used twin joysticks to give the player 360 degree firing action, while at the same time allowing full 360 degree movement.

Out Run, Arcade

Sega‘s single-player arcade classic race game – Out Run. Played and enjoyed by millions of people throughout the world.

Out Run was first released in 1986 and took video game arcades by storm with its superfast, colourful graphics, jaunty music, gripping gameplay, and cabinet steering wheel.
