Atomic Robo-Kid, Arcade

Atomic Robo-Kid is a horizontally-scrolling, progressive weapons shooter, designed by Tsutomu Fujisawa and manufactured by UPL in 1988.

It’s not a very well-known arcade game, but does have its fans. It also managed to get converted to a number of home systems too (including for the Sega Megadrive, but it never appeared on the SNES).

Electrician, Famicom Disk System

Electrician is a simple wire-connecting game originally made by Synapse Software for Atari 8-bit computers, and later converted to the Famicom Disk System by KEMCO in 1986.

The game is set in New York; the opening cut scene shows a beautiful and poignant pixel representation of the Twin Towers.

Slam Tilt is a pinball simulator published by 21st Century Entertainment in 1996.

It was developed by Liquid Dezign HB for AGA-equipped Amigas (AGA being an enhanced graphical chipset) and features super-slick scrolling and amazingly fast gameplay.

Moon Patrol, Arcade

Moon Patrol is an early colour arcade shooter, released by Irem in 1982.

It was distinctive because you drove a vehicle, at the bottom of the screen, and had to jump over craters and obstacles, as well as shoot aliens in the sky. So you are keeping an eye on the road, while at the same time shooting enemies flying above you. This was a neat innovation at the time and earned Irem some respect.

Iridis Alpha, Commodore 64

Jeff Minter‘s classic Iridis Alpha is a weird horizontal shoot ’em up first released in 1986 through Llamasoft and Hewson Consultants.

Iridis Alpha is one of those games that may be too “out there” – too strange – for a lot of players to bother getting their heads around, but it really is worth the effort.

I’m not going to explain how to play it though. Just look at the pretty pictures…
