In Data East‘s 1986 Wild West-themed scrolling action game – Express Raider (aka “Western Express” in Japan) – you’re not trying to be the good guy; you’re actually the bad guy, trying to hold up a series of trains and steal as much gold and money as possible.
Chase HQ, Sega Master System
The Sega Master System version of Taito‘s classic Chase HQ was first released in 1991, and it is a relatively poor approximation of the ground-breaking arcade game.
RoboCop, PC
The 1989 MS-DOS version of RoboCop is part conversion of the Data East arcade game, and partly does it own thing, with level structures that connect rooms above and below, with staircases that instantly flip the screen, rather than scroll it. The majority of levels do scroll horizontally, though, although the scrolling is very jerky.

The Amstrad version of Ocean‘s RoboCop came out in 1989, and it is much like the Commodore 64 version, but with a smaller play window and chunkier graphics.

Crime Wave is a side-scrolling run-and-gun shooter, developed by The Code Monkeys for Access Software and first published in 1990. It is reminiscent of the 1989 arcade game, Narc, and could in fact be described as a clone of that game.

Developed and published by Access Software in 1990, Crime Wave is a side-scrolling run-and-gun shooter for MS-DOS that uses digitised graphics for the backgrounds, sprites, and cut scenes. Crime Wave – it has to be said – looks and plays like a clone of Williams Electronics‘ 1989 arcade game, Narc, which it almost certainly is.
Chase HQ, ZX Spectrum
There’s no doubting that Ocean Software‘s 1989 Spectrum conversion of Taito‘s classic Chase HQ is impressive. Programmed by John O’Brien, with graphics by Bill Harbison, and sound by Jonathan Dunn, this 8-bit chase game really pushes the Spectrum to its limits, and puts pretty much every other third-person driving game on the Speccy to shame, with its amazing road movement and exciting gameplay.
RoboCop, Amiga
Ocean Software‘s Amiga port of RoboCop was fairly impressive when it first came out in 1989, but – playing it now – it hasn’t stood the test of time particularly well. It’s a scrolling run-and-gun shooter that is loosely-based on the Data East arcade game of the same name (although the arcade game and the home computer versions were developed in parallel).
