Viewpoint, FM Towns

Originally released as an arcade game on Neo Geo MVS hardware, Viewpoint is an isometric bullet hell shooter originally developed by Aicom, ported by Sammy and published by Ving for the FM Towns in 1993. It obviously takes inspiration from Sega‘s Zaxxon, but its aesthetic owes more to Irem‘s R-Type.

Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, Arcade

Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter is the sequel to X-Men vs. Street Fighter and the second instalment in the Marvel vs. Capcom series. The game was first released as an arcade game by Capcom in 1997. It then received ports to the Sega Saturn in 1998 and the PlayStation in 1999.

X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Arcade

X-Men vs. Street Fighter is Capcom‘s third fighting game to feature Marvel Comics characters, following X-Men: Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes, and is the first instalment in the Marvel vs. Capcom series. It was originally released as an arcade game in 1996, and was ported to the Sega Saturn in 1997, the Sony PlayStation in 1998, and Windows PCs in 2001.

Marvel Super Heroes, Arcade

Marvel Super Heroes is a one-on-one fighting game developed by Capcom and distributed into arcades in 1995. It is the second Capcom beat ’em up based on characters from the Marvel Comics line and is loosely based on “The Infinity Gauntlet” storyline from the Marvel Universe. The gameplay follows the Street Fighter II template for fighting games and uses six buttons and a joystick for each player. The game can be played in either normal or ‘turbo’ mode.

X-Men: Children of the Atom is the first in a series of fighting games from Capcom, based on characters from Marvel Comics. It follows the same conventions, and uses the same controls, as the Street Fighter II series and first came out in arcades in 1994 (1995 in North America and Europe).

The Cliffhanger: Edward Randy, Arcade

This over-the-top action game was developed and published by Data East in 1990 and in it you play as Edward Randy, an Indiana Jones-style adventurer who is fighting against an army of evil soldiers, led by “Dark Ogre“, and who’ve kidnapped his friend’s daughter Charlotte, who he is trying to rescue.

Tiger Road is a single-player hack-and-slash platform/action game, released into arcades by Capcom in 1987. It pre-dates Sega‘s Golden Axe by two years, but is very similar in terms of gameplay.

Marble Madness, Megadrive

The Japanese Megadrive release of Marble Madness is completely different to the North American and European release of the game and was developed and published by Tengen in 1993. It is far superior to the Western Megadrive/Genesis release and is more authentic to the arcade original. In fact: it is very, very close to the arcade game, in terms of graphics, sound and gameplay. If you didn’t know that the Japanese version of the game was different, I’d recommend checking it out as it may shock you to find out how good it is…
