The Dreamcast version of Soulcalibur is an enhanced port of the 1998 arcade game by Namco. It was released worldwide in 1999 and features “ten new characters” and enhanced new graphics.

Soulcalibur, Arcade
After the arcade game, Soul Edge in 1996, and the PlayStation conversion of that game in 1998 (called “Soul Blade” in the West), came Soulcalibur in 1999. It was made available in arcades first, as a two-player cabinet, and did reasonably good business.
The basic storyline is about a group of fighters battling it out for possession of a mystical sword called “The Soul Edge“.
Soul Blade, PlayStation
Released in December 1996 in Japan, and in 1997 in North America and Europe, Soul Blade is the PlayStation port of Namco‘s Soul Edge arcade fighting game – the predecessor to the Soulcalibur series.
Soul Edge was a pioneering early attempt at using Motion Capture in a fighting game – for the realistic animation of the combatants – and it had quite an impact on fighting game fans when it was first released.

Developed by “Project Soul” and released into arcades by Namco in April 1996, Soul Edge is a weapons-based, one-on-one fighting game that serves as the predecessor to the Soulcalibur series.

Bomberman, PC Engine
The PC Engine version of Bomberman was where this famous video game series really began to take off. It features enhanced graphics, sound and gameplay, further refining Bomberman into the more familiar ‘modern’ incarnation that most games-players know and love. Bomberman was released in Japan in 1990; in North America, for the TurboGrafx-16, by NEC Technologies in 1991, and in Europe by Ubisoft in 1992.

Developed by a company called “Sun L” (who are uncredited in the game itself), and published by Capcom in Japan, and Nintendo in the West, Street Fighter II on the Game Boy is a cut-down, monochrome version of the famous Street Fighter II arcade game. It was initially released in 1995.
OutRunners, Arcade
OutRunners is the 1993 sequel to the classic driving game, Out Run. It is specifically designed for two player head-to-head gameplay, which is why the game renders two screens – side by side – by default. For the purposes of this article, though, I’m showing just a single screen, because it looks better.
With enough machines, OutRunners could accommodate up to eight players racing against each other at the same time. An online version of the game was also released, allowing players to race each other over the internet, which was revolutionary for the time.
Super Street Fighter II Turbo, 3DO
The 3DO has a surprisingly good port of Capcom‘s classic beat ’em up, Super Street Fighter II. It was released as Super Street Fighter II Turbo and features a few tweaks that differentiate it from other versions of the game, such as fight speed (three settings) and a difficulty slider (eight settings).
