Tetris 2 was released for the Game Boy, NES and SNES, by Nintendo, in 1993. It was developed by TOSE Co. Ltd., with the cooperation of Nintendo R&D1. The Game Boy version, that we’re looking at here, has Bullet-Proof Software shown as the developer.
Tetris 2 has a single-player or a versus mode (via link-up cable), and “Normal” or “Puzzle” play modes.
Whichever mode you play in, in Tetris 2 there is one major change to the gameplay: rather than clearing lines, you now have to match three blocks either horizontally or vertically, for them to clear from the board.
As you’d expect: “Normal” mode is more or less straightforward Tetris, although the higher the level you start on, the more obstacles are thrown onto the board.
“Puzzle” mode is different in that the game puts shaped obstacles on the board and requires that you destroy flashing lights by combining them with your Tetronimos.
Although Tetris 2 is a decent variation of the classic puzzle game, it didn’t really grab me. The new ‘puzzle’ variation works okay, but there just didn’t seem to be very much else new in the game. It really could’ve done with more variety – in both the gameplay, and visually.
