Unreal, PC
Unreal is a pioneering first-person shooter developed by Epic Games and Digital Extremes and first published by GT Interactive in 1998. It is the very first game in the Unreal series and was the first game to use the Unreal Engine, which was a ground-breaking 3D game engine at the time. Of course most gamers know about the Unreal Engine, and how it continues to innovate now, but this game is where Unreal first started.
Clive Barker’s Undying, PC
British author Clive Barker was a writer and creative consultant on this 2001 Windows/Mac release.
Clive Barker’s Undying is a survival horror, first-person shooter – with magic – and was developed by EA Los Angeles. The game sold poorly on release and a planned multiplayer patch and sequel were both canned.
BioShock Infinite, PC
BioShock Infinite (2013) is the third game in the BioShock series, and it is one a hell of a game! It is a bright, imaginative, funny, touching, emotional, violent and downright surprising adventure, set in a steampunk-style cloud city called Columbia.
BioShock 2, PC
BioShock 2 was first released in 2010 by 2K Games.
Personally, I think BioShock 2 just edges it over its predecessor, because the setting is really interesting (rather than hunting Big Daddies, in this one you get to play AS a Big Daddy), and also because this sequel has a decent multiplayer side (the first BioShock had no multiplayer). And also because the game mechanics are slightly more detailed than the first game.
BioShock, PC
BioShock was first released in 2007 by 2K Games.
It has garnered something of a reputation over the years – for being a game with real drama and emotion. And it is true to say that BioShock is not your average type of first person shooter.
Deus Ex, PC
A game close to my heart, as I was the first person in the world to review Ion Storm‘s brilliant Deus Ex, for PC Zone magazine in 2000. Click here for the review.
Deus Ex (pronounced Day-Us-Ex – NOT Deuce-Ex) is a classic first-person, futuristic action game with stealth overtones, although you can choose whether to blast your way through it or not.
