System Shock, PC

This is the original VGA/SVGA* version of System Shock, first released in 1994. The game was developed by Looking Glass Technologies and published by Origin Systems in North America and Electronic Arts in Europe.

*= System Shock was originally released in VGA (320×200 resolution), but was soon upgraded to SVGA (640×480 resolution) via patches and re-releases. I’m showing both the VGA and SVGA versions here.

System Shock is a classic first-person RPG in space, and is a spiritual successor the Ultima Underworld series of games, using the same mouse/keyboard controls and (software-rendered) 3D engine.

This first version of System Shock, to be honest, is very clunky to play, but those who are persistent, and prepared to learn the controls, will still find a fantastic game hidden beyond all the fumbling. Those who are impatient, or want a more modern experience, should probably play the 2023 Nightdive enhanced version**, or the 2023 remake, instead.

**=If you buy the enhanced version of System Shock you get the ‘classic’ (VGA) version free with it. It’s a separate install that uses DOSBox.

I played this version for a good chunk of time recently and loved every minute of it. I’ve probably played through the introductory level in System Shock at least ten times, and this time I was determined to get far past that.
