Flashback, 3DO

The 3DO version of Delphine Software‘s futuristic platform adventure, Flashback, was ported by Tiertex Design Studios and published by US Gold in North America and Europe in 1993. Flashback on the 3DO was also released by Electronic Arts Victor in Japan in 1995.

While the game looks and plays identically to the original, it does have CGI cut scenes that are unique to the 3DO. These replace the hand-drawn animated sequences of the original.

In Flashback you control Conrad Hart – a man who wakes up on a hostile alien planet and discovers that he has lost his memory, so he must begin the process of regaining it.

Conrad has a gun, which he can use to defend himself, and must find various useful items as he explores. Gameplay in Flashback revolves around running, jumping, climbing, and puzzle-solving. The game requires skilled use of the gamepad to stay alive, but once you get used to the controls you can really move with a purpose.

Flashback has an ‘easy mode’ that enables you to practise moving Conrad without too much risk, but it ends after the first level. To continue further you have to play in ‘normal mode’. Passwords can be used to start the game from the beginning of later levels.

Flashback on the 3DO is an excellent conversion. The only criticisms I have of it are: the slight delay when loading between screens, and the pre-rendered cut scenes looking dated. Otherwise, it’s an excellent port of a great game.
