Slap Fight, Commodore 64

A Commodore 64 conversion of the 1986 arcade game by Toaplan, published by Imagine in 1987.

Slap Fight on the C64 was programmed by John Meegan, with graphics by Stephen Wahid and sound by Martin Galway.

Playing it now is still challenging and fun, and also frustrating at times. Graphically, the scrolling is smooth and the sprites are plentiful, so it looks really good overall. It’s also a good example of a C64 game with excellent use of sprites in the border, with your weapons shown at the bottom, and your score and lives at the top. In terms of playfield design, this is among the very best on the Commodore 64.

C64 Slap Fight has stood the test of time surprisingly well – compared to others in its class. The scrolling play area is big, varied and detailed, and the sprites in the border trick make it look totally pro. This could even be one of my favourite C64 shooters! 🙂
