Developed by Criterion Games and published by Electronic Arts in 2006, Black is a console-exclusive First-Person Shooter set in contemporary Ingushetia and Chechnya, Russia. You play as a member of a CIA “Black Ops” unit, embarking on various missions.
The gameplay in Black owes more to Call of Duty than anything else. You can carry only two weapons at once; your stance is shown on the HUD, and the controls are pretty much identical to CoD. Ultimately, this is a straightforward FPS, albeit one that is beautifully polished and highly engrossing.
One thing I did notice about Black is that it doesn’t have any auto-aiming or target locking, like some console shooters do. Instead you have to look down the barrel of your weapon (by holding L1), to shoot with greater accuracy.
The presentation in Black is exceptional, with detailed environments and plenty of atmospherics. It’s still an enjoyable game for those who like console shooters.
