Montezuma’s Revenge, Atari 2600

The Atari 2600 port of Robert Jaeger‘s classic platform adventure, Montezuma’s Revenge, is a cut-down version of the original. It reportedly has half the number of rooms seen in the original Atari 8-bit version. That said: it’s still relatively authentic in its look and feel.

You play as “Panama Joe” and the aim of the game is to escape from Montezuma‘s fortress, with whatever loot you can find. The fortress is filled with snakes, ladders, ropes, doors, traps and intermittent floors, and is a very dangerous place to explore. Certain tools that you find can help in some situations. Collecting a sword, for example, will allow you to touch-kill one enemy, before the sword disappears. Keys will open doors, and so on.

Montezuma’s Revenge is a game I’ve always liked, because it’s well-designed and has its own unique game mechanics (the jump, for example, is very abrupt), and I always like playing the different versions. I even enjoyed this cut-down 2600 version, because the programmer has managed to get the look and feel right.

Montezuma’s Revenge on the Atari 2600 was first published in 1984 by Parker Brothers.
