Elite, Amiga

The 16-bit versions of Bell and Braben‘s classic space trading game, Elite, are a nice step up from their 8-bit counterparts.

The Amiga and Atari ST versions are faster and more colourful versions of Elite. Both were developed by Mr. Micro and published by Firebird in 1988.

The basic game is the same as before: you start out on the planet of Lave and must trade and fight your way up the food chain without getting stranded in space without fuel (very easy to do!) or blasted into a million pieces by Thargoids or pirates. And that’s the trick: Elite is a game that requires some thought; some planning; and plenty of patience to get a foothold in.

What you basically need to do is buy goods for a low price on one planet and sell them for a higher price on another, making a profit. A local chart shows all the planets nearby and clicking on them and accessing the relevant screens shows market prices for goods on individual planets. You can also earn money by blasting known pirates, or by mining asteroids (when you can afford the mining equipment later), or by any number of different means. But the goal is: earn money; buy better equipment; kill more bad guys.

Elite on the Amiga is an engrossing, long-term game. Thankfully, saving the game is easy so you can re-load if you get killed or stranded. Which will be often to begin with.
