The Sega Game Gear conversion of Bubble Bobble was developed and published by Taito themselves and it is a damn sight better than the flawed Game Boy and Game Boy Color conversions, even though the levels in this have been adapted to fit the Game Gear‘s tiny screen.
There’s no annoying sprite flicker; no scrolling, and it’s in colour, although it is a bit too cramped and fast to be considered totally authentic. It’s still an excellent conversion of the classic arcade game, though.
The game has continues and passwords; two-player link-up play; the controls are responsive, and it is a very playable port overall. Bubble Bobble certainly does the Game Gear a service – unlike on Nintendo‘s earlier handhelds.
Bubble Bobble on the Game Gear was first released in 1994.
