Lethal Weapon, Super Nintendo

The Super Nintendo version of Lethal Weapon – based on the 1987 film of the same name – was developed by Ocean Software and first released in 1992. The game was released in conjunction with the film Lethal Weapon 3 and features scenes inspired by all three films.

Lethal Weapon is a simple run-and-gun action game with platforming and shooting elements. You start off in an office (I’m guessing a police office) and must enter various doors to start your missions. Standing in front of a door will tell you what number mission it will start. Pushing up while stood in front of a door will enter it. At the beginning you have access to five different doors and five different missions.

Playing as Mel Gibson you must run, jump, climb and shoot your way though a variety of different levels. Later on you get to play the other guy… Oh, yeah: Danny Glover. That’s right. It’s been a long time since I last saw the film. Sorry.

Where Lethal Weapon – the game – excels are in two areas. In one: the main character’s animation and movement, including his shooting skills, and two: with the backgrounds and environments. Which are generally quite excellent.

The enemies are not very interesting, but as long as they die easily and are plentiful then I guess they serve their purpose.

Lethal Weapon is not a game I anticipated liking much, but the way you move, jump and shoot make it an enthralling game to play for a while. It’s still a generic action game with little variation in it, though, so the magic won’t last for long.
