Developed and published by Titus in 1993, Lamborghini: American Challenge is a third-person racing game where you drive a Lamborghini supercar around various locations in America. And it is an exceptionally good console racer, made from good, old-fashioned 2D pixel art and a convincing old school road effect.
After just a few minutes of play you might have already figured out that this is no ordinary racing game. Firstly: the controls, and the movement of the road and car, are excellent, giving a real sense of speed. Secondly: the game is fast. Very, very fast. It’s almost too fast when you activate your booster…
The undulations in the road, and other roadside traffic, add to the chaos as you drive along. Yes, it is annoying to clip another car as you power through traffic, but if you just chill a little more as you race, instead of tensing up, then you might just make it through those gaps more cleanly.
The game has a split screen two-player versus mode, which was all the rage back in the mid Nineties, and is still great fun to play now.
It also has a frankly awful soundtrack, so get that turned off straight away…
The best thing about Lamborghini: American Challenge, though, is the gameplay, which is quite brilliant.
I’d say that Lamborghini: American Challenge is one of the best SNES driving games ever made. And there are quite a few good ones out there. Ignore its failings and enjoy the sheer playability and speed!
