Written by Jason J. Railton and first released in 2026, Go-Go BunnyGun is a side-scrolling shooter on the ZX Spectrum that features a bunny girl on a rocket, flying through space. With smooth, colourful graphics and compelling gameplay, Go-Go BunnyGun is another great “Modern Retro” release.

The game actually features three different bunny girl pilots, Amy, Heidi and Miya, who you can switch between (by collecting coloured tokens on the battlefield), and who each have their own unique fire and alternative fire systems. And when you’re not playing as those characters you will still occasionally see them flying by in the background of your games. In a later level the other girls will even appear and show you the correct route through a fast-moving obstacle course, which I thought was a great idea.

Go-Go-BunnyGun has some really nice little touches, like the teddy bears riding the satellite cars, and your explosive death (where your bunny girl is unceremoniously thrown from the craft as it disintegrates). It also incorporates modern progressive weapon shooter ideas, like the satellites, and the alt fire method. To use your alt fire you have to hold down the fire button.

The graphics in Go-Go BunnyGun are superb. Clearly the work of someone who understands the Spectrum‘s strengths and limitations. The backgrounds, for example, are simple but really effective. Using pixels and colour sparsely, but in a way that gives the game a unique look. A lot of the sprites have black borders around them, which prevents any colour clash. There’s very little of that on show.

Playability-wise, Go-Go BunnyGun is excellent. The controls are fine, as long as you don’t try to take screenshots of your gameplay as you go. Because pressing other keys will often interfere with (ie. completely stop) your craft movement and lead to lost lives. It did with me, anyway. 🙂

Overall, this is a superb effort from Mr. Railton, and shows that the Spectrum homebrew scene is alive and well in 2026. Definitely worth a download. Maybe even worth paying for, in support of the developer.
