Kirby’s Dream Land 2, Super Game Boy

The enhanced version of Kirby’s Dream Land 2 is a real treat on the Super Game Boy. While it only has one special border to choose from, it does have enhanced sound effects (like the sound of wind blowing on some levels), level-specific palettes, and even some special full-colour screens such as the title screen, menus and the ending.

Kirby’s Dream Land 2 is a delightful romp through a series of platform-based worlds, where Kirby must avoid damage; find secrets, and rescue his animal friends, who’ll help him on his adventure. Once you’ve completed a level, the door to the next one will open up, until you finally reach the boss door at the end of the sequence. When you defeat a boss Kirby then jumps on a star and rides to the next world.

Possibly the best thing about playing Kirby’s Dream Land 2 on the Super Game Boy is the fact that the colours change depending on where you are in the game. Each world has a basic colour scheme, and special rooms have their own colour palette, which really adds to the visual variety of the game.

There’s also a brilliant fan-made ROM hack of this game, that converts it to play on the Game Boy Color, called Kirby’s Dream Land 2 DX, which is definitely worth investigating.
