Developed by Infinity Ward and first published by Activision in 2007, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was the point where the Call of Duty series went from merely just “big” to absolutely stratospheric.
Which is funny, because it was the point in the series where I lost interest. LOL. Revisiting the game now, I’m really impressed by it. The opening pre-credit sequence is very dramatic, and the game keeps up the pace with stunning visuals, sound and music.
Gameplay-wise, this is a step up from previous Call of Duty games too, although essentially it’s still a First-Person Shooter. The CoD compass has gone, as have a few other HUD elements, but it still feels like Call of Duty, even if it may not initially look like it.
Call of Duty 4 has a brilliant single-player campaign and a variety of multiplayer modes, and has been particularly praised for its online play. Many people grew up playing this game, and it changed their view of First-Person Shooters forever. And I can see why, playing it now.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was released for Windows, Mac OS, PS3, PS4, Wii, XBox 360, and XBox One, and was later remastered by Raven Software. The game has reportedly sold over 15 million units worldwide to date, so clearly there’s a huge appetite for it. The long line of Modern Warfare sequels after this is another testament to its power.
