Arch Rivals is a conversion of the Midway arcade game of the same name, and it’s a good one too. The Megadrive version was developed by Flying Edge and published by Midway in 1992.
Games are two-on-two and take place on a standard, pro basketball court (there don’t seem to be any court variations, that I could see). This isn’t a basketball game about realism, or stats, or customisation, but about having fun doing stuff you’re not supposed to. And scoring more than the opposition…
What makes Arch Rivals fun to play is that this is basically basketball, where punching is allowed… Lol. You can clock your opponents as often as you like, and a foul will never be called. This makes for especially fun two-player games, against friends.
The graphics and sound in the Genesis version of Arch Rivals are simplified, compared to the arcade original, but they work well enough, and the presentation throughout the game is very good. This is a professional and playable conversion, and one to have in your collection, if you’re a Megadrive/Genesis fan.
