Lotus Turbo Challenge 2, Atari ST

Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 is a classic 2D arcade-style racing game, created by Magnetic Fields and published by Gremlin Graphics in 1991.

With this sequel Magnetic Fields moved away from realism and made the game easier to play, at the same time upping the variety in the courses. There was also split-screen simultaneous play, which was (and still is) a brilliant feature.

Lotus 2 is just great fun to pick up and play. Blasting supercars through undulating courses without having to fear for your life is what video-gaming is all about. Computers and software had advanced just enough to make reasonably realistic roads, vehicles and inertia when this was made. Of course it was all faked – these were 2D games, not 3D games – but the sensation of speed and excitement was tangible and Lotus 2 set the bar high when it came to 2D racing games.
