Released exclusively for the Game Gear – in Japan only – by Sega in 1992, Phantasy Star Adventure is a spin-off from the main Phantasy Star series and is a kind of RPG/adventure controlled with a simple menu system. A fan translation into English makes it playable to non Japanese speakers.
You play as a government agent who is searching for a kidnapped scientist and his invention. With the help of your sister, Layla, you must investigate the disappearance and bring the offending kidnapper to justice.
Phantasy Star Adventure is simple to play, but not easy to crack. Like a lot of so-called “adventures” from the late 80s and early 90s, this game has its fair share of obscure puzzles and instant-death traps. Solving something usually involves using an item in a certain place.
There is combat in the game, although it’s not particularly great. The outcome of battles is decided by dice rolls (which appear on screen when they’re rolling).
I’m sure many Japanese kids enjoyed playing Phantasy Star Adventure when it first came out, but I’ve got to admit that it’s not my cup of tea. It’s not bad, though, and some people will enjoy playing it more than I.
