Rick Dangerous 2 is the 1990 sequel to the original platform game, Rick Dangerous. It was published by Micro Style (a sub-label of Microprose), and was once again developed by Core Design of Derby.
In this game UFOs have landed in London and Rick goes after the aliens. Unfortunately they take off with Rick on board their spaceship, and make him do a forced tour of their home planet.
The first four levels can be played in any order, but only after completing those does the fifth and final level unlock. This fifth level can be played repeatedly – once unlocked – until the game is ended, but the actual game can only be completed by doing all five levels in order, in one sitting.
Rick is now armed with a laser pistol, and can drop bombs too. These bombs can also be slid along the floor, so their use becomes quite strategic. The pogo stick has been replaced with a punch attack. In some parts of the game Rick can also ride a flying scooter.
One thing to watch out for are hidden switches. They can be difficult to spot. You must press a switch to activate it.
Like its predecessor, Rick Dangerous 2 is equal parts frustration and fun. The graphics are still exceptional – even though Rick has had a questionable make-over – and the cute sound effects still give the game its base humour. Rick Dangerous 2‘s still fun to play for a while, before the anger sets in, and you go play another game that is far less stressful! 😉
Was also released for Amiga, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum, and PC MS-DOS.
